Endogenous tripeptide antioxidant (γ-glutamyl-cysteinyl-glycine). Glutathione is the most abundant intracellular antioxidant, a tripeptide of glutamate, cysteine and glycine found in millimolar concentrations in every cell. It buffers reactive oxygen species, recycles vitamins C and E, and carries out phase II detoxification in the liver. Research-grade glutathione is used as a reference antioxidant and in oxidative-stress assays.

Redox biology: gSH:GSSG ratio as an oxidative-stress marker. Detoxification: phase II conjugation in hepatocytes. Melanogenesis: tyrosinase inhibition in pigment-cell assays. Mitochondrial protection: rOS buffering in stressed cells. Clinical studies have examined oral and intravenous glutathione in oxidative-stress conditions, skin pigmentation and liver disease with mixed results, partly because oral glutathione is poorly absorbed. In-vitro work uses it as a positive control for antioxidant capacity and in melanogenesis assays.

Oral glutathione trials reported modest increases in blood glutathione with mixed functional endpoints; intravenous studies in skin pigmentation and liver disease reported short-term changes. In-vitro, it is a reference antioxidant.

Oral and intravenous glutathione are generally well tolerated in trials; intravenous use in unregulated clinics has produced reports of adverse reactions. The research powder is for laboratory use.

Glutathione is used at far higher concentrations than signalling peptides, so the vial is sized accordingly. It needs a larger reconstitution volume, about 6 mL, than a standard peptide vial.

Add about 6 mL of bacteriostatic water slowly down the inside of the vial and swirl gently; do not shake. 600mg in 6 mL gives 100 mg/mL. Refrigerate at 2–8 °C after reconstitution and use within 8–12 weeks. The calculator has this vial preset.
